Let's Learn Lingo
How to get started
Once you decide to use cloth diapers you will find that you then have different styles of cloth diapers to choose from. And within those different styles are different brands. It can be a little overwhelming!
That's why we developed a cheat sheet.
We will give you a run down of the terms and the lingo, what we like about them (Yipee!), possible drawbacks (Gasp!), and a sample of each brand name we carry in that style of diaper (Woo-hoo!).
Now let's get started. Don't worry, there won't be a quiz at the end.
Prefolds
Look like this:
Description :
This is the most basic cloth diaper available, and the one that most closely resembles the traditional cloth diapers that your Grandparents probably used. They are also the most economical. At around a couple of dollars a piece, many parents choose to invest in a few dozen of these, a few covers, and Snappi's and voilà! You are set to not only pad your baby's bottom, but also your bottom line!
WHAT WE LOVE
Prefolds are the cheapest way to go, especially if you use them on subsequent children. They are durable, functional, and get the job done with no messy 'blow outs' or leaking. A no frills approach that works.
POSSIBLE DRAWBACKS
It takes a few practice runs to get the exact fold right (yes there are different folding options) and they are probably the least "Babysitter Friendly" option. Also, Prefolds also require more "equipment" such as covers and Snappi's. This brings us to the next style of diaper

Fitteds
Look like this:
Description:
Fitted's look more like what you think of when you think "diaper." Fitteds are usually equipped with snaps or aplix (like Velcro) and do not need a Snappi. Fitted diapers will still require a diaper cover.
WHAT WE LOVE
Fitteds are very common and easy to find. There is a large variety of materials and fabrics to choose from; bamboo, hemp, cotton, and more. If you're baby has a sensitive rear you can experiment with different fabrics to see what works best.
POSSIBLE DRAWBACKS
With the cost of the fitted and a diaper cover this diapering route can cost quite a bit more than prefolds.
Brands: Thirsties, Kissaluv's, Ariana's Clothesline, Kiwi Pie

Diaper covers and wraps
Look like this:
Description: Very simply put, these are the covers that you put over the cloth diapers to ensure that there is no leakage. These come in a variety of material and styles, none of which are the crunchy plastic styles of times past. Today's diaper covers are comfortable, breathable, and CUTE! You can choose from Velcro or snaps, as well as pull on versions in fabrics/materials including: PUL, wool, and fleece. A little experimentation will help you decide what best works for your baby.
Snappi's
Look like this:
Description:
A 'snappy' little device that fastens the diaper on your baby. This takes the place of pins, and leaves no chance of poking or scratching your little one. Whew!
What it looks like when used with a prefold:
Also a cute option: Boingo's
Pocket/Sleeve Diapers
Look like this:
Description:
Just like the name implies, these are a type of diaper that has a built in pocket, where the liners /inserts go.
WHAT WE LOVE
Pocket Diapers are very easy to adjust to meet the specific needs of your child. More liners = More absorbency. Simple. Oh, and they are a bit more "babysitter friendly" than other options.
POSSIBLE DRAWBACKS
Sometimes the washing duties and assembly can be a little time consuming, as you sometimes have to remove and then re-stuff the actual inserts into the pockets after drying.
Brands: Thirsties, Happy Heiny's

All-in-two's
Look like this:
Description:
All in Two's (Or AI2's as they are sometimes called...Go ahead, let it roll off your tongue) are one of the easiest options available in modern cloth diapering. It's simply the outer shell and an insert that simply lays or snaps into the shell.
WHAT WE LOVE
Super easy peasy. Great for sleepy night time changes and also a very "Babysitter Friendly" option that requires little if any "learn time."
POSSIBLE DRAWBACKS
There is some 'stuffing' that may be involved after the diaper has dried, and it can be a bit tricky finding the best brand that works for your baby.

All in Ones
Look like this:
Description: All in Ones (AIO's...Go ahead, say it a few times) is just what it says: A handy diaper that is all in one compact form and requires no assembly. Put on, take off, and wash. That's it.
WHAT WE LOVE
AIO's are the most user-friendly diaper. Babysitters, Daddy's, Grandparents, Day Care's, pretty much anybody can do this. They are simple to take on and take off.
POSSIBLE DRAWBACKS
These types of diapers do cost more, so the initial investment is greater than with simply Prefolds, but still substantially less than using disposable diapers. Also, finding the right brands and fit for your baby can sometimes be an exercise in trial and error. They also take longer to dry than other styles of diapers.
Brands: BumGenius, Grovias, Thirsties

Diapering Systems
Looks like this:
Description:
A diapering system is a style of cloth diapering that is gaining popularity as it requires using only a handful shells and snap in liners. The liners come in different sizes and material options, including overnight absorbency.
WHAT WE LOVE
This type of diapering is a one-size system and grows with your child, so it can be a really cost efficient option. These diapers tend to have a slightly trimmer fit, and speedy laundry routine as well-no folding!
POSSIBLE DRAWBACKS
Using this system will take some trial and error to see what fit and absorbency works best for your child. Sometimes getting a snug fit against leaking can be little bit trickier because there is no "folding" taking place.
